Not long ago we thought that something good happened. The Guardian had reported what was potentially good news, although laced with skepticism. They reported that Protected Marine Areas were covering an increasingly large portion of the open seas.
This sounded nice. It was a nice reprieve from the usual daily armageddon that they face over there.
Not so fast, they were elated to report!
A new study just emerged that proves that life for fish and other sea creatures inside the preserves is actually worse than life outside them.
These so-called nature preservation areas are literally death traps.
Marine Protection Areas = Marine Death Traps
How is this possible?
Here’s the problem: They protected the best areas.
They protected the areas with the most fish, the most food, the places fish like to live. Now the fishing boats cruise around these so called protected areas at their leisure, scooping up fish that thought they were safe.
That’s just great! Just when the fish thought they could take a breather for a few days, in come the fishermen to take advantage.
In short, the fish fell for the oldest trick in the book. Similar to bait, or chum, the fish were lured into these areas with the promise of safety. ‘Trust us, we’ll protect you,’ we told them. Fools! Fish aren’t that smart, and now we’re cleaning up!
We’re not that smart either. For a second we thought there was a glimmer of hope. We got sucked in, as well. So it’s not like we can feel all high and mighty.
Protected nature areas? Ha.
SO MUCH FOR THAT!
Thanks anyway. Maybe there will be some good news in 2019. Fingers crossed!
One consolation, of course, is that, now that fishing is so much easier, the cost of fish is poised to drop. We might as well enjoy that until it’s gone!
