Optimism is a big trend right now. Everyone wants to talk about how great things are, and therefore how great we are.
People used to have the bumper sticker that said: ‘Mommy what did trees look like?’
Now they don’t.
Because everyone says there are more trees living in North America today than were here when the settlers first arrived. That’s a big deal! And it totally contradicts all the doom and gloom you hear all over the place about the world ending in 12 years or so.
But what the statistics people aren’t telling you is this: There are more trees, but they are way smaller. And most of them live in places you will never go to. And there are way less native grasslands. And the trees aren’t necessarily part of diverse, healthy forests.
That’s the beauty of statistics. When deployed correctly, they can prove that you’re right about anything!
What does this mean for the future?
It means we’re screwed. We’re finding creative ways to fool ourselves.
AND IT’S WORKING! It makes us feel great!
But the world is still going to end in 12 years. So who cares about the trees? Or the fish, or the whales, or the icebergs?
THE FUTURE IS SHORT!
